Who is eligible to apply? 

Students should use their 4-year graduation date to determine if they are eligible. For reference, our Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 fellowship applications are eligible to undergraduate students with an anticipated graduation date between December 2026 to May 2028. If you are a junior or senior looking to get involved, please reference our mentorship application. Community college students ARE eligible

When do applications open? 

Fellowship applications open every year in August and November for our Fall and Spring cohorts, respectively. For reference, our Fall 2023 fellowship applications opened August 1st and Spring 2024 fellowship applications opened November 14th. What does the application process look like? 

The application process consists of a formal application including short answer responses, and a second round of live interviews with leadership team members

Are international students eligible to apply? 

Yes! International students are eligible for the program as long as they attend a U.S. based institution/college/university. You do not have to be a U.S. citizen to apply 

Do fellows need to have any experience to apply? 

No they do not! Our program is geared towards helping first and second year students that do not have much experience in their respective fields 

Do I have to be a business major to apply? 

No, we encourage all majors to apply. Our previous fellowship cohorts had a diversity of majors including and excluding business-focused majors 

Is there an application fee?

No, all applications can be submitted without a fee 

What are the costs associated with the program? 

There is a one-time $25 security deposit for all fellows who receive admission and accept their spot in the fellowship program. This security deposit will be refunded upon successful completion of the program. There are no other fees associated with the program – all programming and resources are provided at no-cost for all fellows

Will I have the chance to connect with other fellows in person?

While the fellowship program is completely virtual, many fellows meet eachother in person through informal meet-ups throughout the summer and at various business conferences. Periodically, HeadStart will host in-person professional and/or social events in different cities across the United States. Regardless, HeadStart’s community is constantly active in a virtual environment and none of our members fall short of interaction with one another 

How much commitment is needed for the fellowship program? 

Fellows are expected to commit an ample amount of time to the program each week. 3-4 hours a week is required and we have a strict attendance policy as we want to ensure that all fellows get the most that they can out of the program  

I don’t know which vertical I want to pursue yet. How would I go about that? 

This is perfectly fine! We understand that fellows may not have had the opportunities to explore different industries they may be interested in – this is where HeadStart Fellowship comes in! We fully encourage all fellows to explore various verticals, attend different vertical sessions, and leverage Headstart’s resources to find out what their passion is

What does the application process look like? 

The application process consists of a resume drop with short answer questions and one round of virtual interviews with the Vice-Presidents of Mentorship

What does the time commitment look like? 

The time commitment we expect from our mentors is an average of 1 hour per week for mandatory events. This may fluctuate week to week, with some weeks being heavier and other weeks being lighter. Our program includes some mandatory mentor check-ins, mandatory pod meetings, mandatory one-on-one meetings with your mentor, and a variety of optional professional development events, including all General Education and networking events our fellows are invited to. Usually all mandatory scheduled meetings from our end take place Sunday evening (central time) whereas the one-on-ones are scheduled between mentors and fellows based on their time preferences

How many mentees will I have?

We expect each mentor to have around 2 fellows as mentees for the duration of the fellowship program. This number may fluctuate between 1-3 depending on our fellow to mentor ratio

What are some benefits a mentor gets from joining HeadStart

As a mentor, you get to meet underclassmen that are starting their professional journeys and share your insights and experience with them. Moreover, you get access to all General Education, vertical-specific (consulting, finance, technology), networking sessions, and more that HeadStart organizes. Note: while most of these events are mandatory for fellows, these are optional for mentors

Are international students eligible to apply? 

Yes! International students are eligible for the program as long as they attend a U.S. based institution/college/university. You do not have to be a U.S. citizen to apply

There are no other fees associated with the mentorship program. Alongside the mentorship platform, all programming and resources are provided at no-cost to all mentors
